**A new Deutsche Welle documentary explores how Soviet repression, exile and spiritual searching helped shape the Estonian composer, Arvo Pärt’s singular musical language.**

A short documentary by Deutsche Welle charts Pärt’s journey from a prefabricated apartment block in Soviet-era Tallinn to the [world’s leading concert halls](https://estonianworld.com/culture/arvo-part-tops-global-performance-charts-again-at-90/)
.

Produced with the Goethe-Institut, the 13-minute film combines rare archive footage with contributions from Pärt’s family, researchers and leading Estonian musicians. It examines the composer’s discovery of Gregorian chant and the spiritual ideas behind tintinnabuli, the spare, bell-like style that came to define his work.

The documentary also traces Pärt’s departure from Estonia in 1980 and the role of producer Manfred Eicher and his ECM label in bringing the composer’s music to a global audience. His work has since reached far beyond the concert hall, appearing in cinema and inspiring artists including the German painter Gerhard Richter.

The conductor Paavo Järvi recalls Pärt’s position in Soviet-occupied Estonia, while Kristiina Poska discusses the emotional power of his music. Jaan-Eik Tulve and Vox Clamantis – the Estonian vocal ensemble closely associated with the composer – provide performances, and Pärt’s son Michael reflects on the [Arvo Pärt Centre](https://www.arvopart.ee/en/)
in Laulasmaa and his father’s bond with Estonia and nature.

The film concludes by considering Pärt’s influence on his homeland and [his receipt of the Goethe Medal](https://estonianworld.com/culture/arvo-part-becomes-the-first-estonian-to-receive-germanys-goethe-medal/)
in 2026 – presenting a composer for whom silence is not an absence, but part of the music itself.
