**Virko Veskoja discovered Britain’s emerging jungle scene through late-night Finnish radio and recreated its futuristic sound on homemade equipment in 1990s Estonia; more than three decades later, he is bringing the music back to its source.**

In early 1990s Estonia, Britain’s rave revolution arrived after dark and at a distance. Virko Veskoja would tune into Finnish radio broadcasts carrying frantic breakbeats, weightless strings and sampled voices from the rapidly changing UK underground.

It sounded unlike anything he had heard before: a new technological language, “like machines trying to communicate with people”. For a young producer in a country emerging from Soviet occupation, the music opened a portal into another world.

More than three decades later, Veskoja is completing an unlikely circuit. Performing as LU:K, one of the founding names of Estonia’s jungle and drum & bass scene, he will make his UK debut at Radial club in Tottenham, north London, on Friday, 9 October.

Virko Veskoja, the producer behind the pioneering Estonian jungle project Lu, will make his UK debut in London on 9 October 2026. Private collection.

Veskoja formed LU:K with Tõnis Valk in 1994, three years after Estonia restored its independence. Imported records and professional studio equipment were difficult to obtain, while practical knowledge of electronic music production was scarcer still.

The pair responded with the resourcefulness characteristic of Estonia’s early electronic underground. They worked with entry-level music software, self-built computers and homemade soundcards, attempting to reconstruct rhythms first heard through the static of foreign radio.

The limitations became part of the sound. While much of the jungle produced in Britain at the time was becoming harder and more abrasive, LU:K paired intricate breakbeats with warm synthesiser pads, orchestral textures and fragments of soulful vocals.

Tracks including “La:v”, “Lovin U” and “010” could be forceful without surrendering their strange, dreamlike quality. The Estonian music critic Tõnis Kahu described “La:v” as “softly totalitarian, mildly, numbingly violent, like an antidepressant … programming through metaphysical beauty”.

LU:K produced a small but influential body of work between 1994 and 1997, much of it distributed on cassette. The project then slipped from view, but its reputation continued to grow. Original tapes and CDs became prized collectors’ items, while younger producers began to rediscover LU:K as an essential, if elusive, part of Estonia’s rave history.

The music became more widely available in May 2025, when the Tallinn label Memme Vaev released an eight-track, self-titled compilation on vinyl and digitally. It brought together LU:K’s best-known recordings and material recovered from obsolete hard drives, introducing the project to listeners who had not been present during Estonia’s first, improvised encounter with rave culture.

The London appearance has the symmetry of a signal finally returning to its transmitter. The sounds that travelled across the Baltic Sea through Finnish radio, before being reconstructed on makeshift Estonian machinery, will now be played in the city where they began.

LU:K is due to perform at 11.45pm. The Loose Lips-promoted programme also features Dwarde and Abby Daze, Ac1d Vicious and Josie Bee, An3 and Freya Algiz, Sunden, Medallion Man and Joel Kane.

The event takes place at Radial, a new independent venue within the Ten87 studio complex near Seven Sisters station. The 250-capacity space opened in September with a custom-built sound system and a programme devoted to live music, club nights and listening events.

For Veskoja, it is a first London performance. For the music, it is a homecoming of a more complicated kind.

*LU:K performs at Radial, 39b Markfield Road, London N15 4QA, on Friday, 9 October, from 8pm to 3am. The event is for over-18s.* [Tickets are available from Resident Advisor](https://ra.co/events/2509881)
