# A picture of Estonian winter praised in the Outdoor Photographer of the Year competition

![Image](https://estonianworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Estonia-Jaak-Sarv-1-1024x396.jpg)

See ongi maagiline Eestimaa talv. --- Thermometer is shows -20 degrees C below zero, but water at the spring is flowing like it was in the summer. Morning sun is peeking behind frost covered trees. It seems like I'm in some fairy tale without any rules where everything is possible. This is the magic of Estonian winter. Eesti, Jaanuar 2016 / Estonia, January 2016

### **An image of the winter scenery in Prandi Springs in Estonia has been commended by the Outdoor Photographer of the Year competition, a prestigious international photography contest.**

A picture taken by Jaak Sarv in Prandi Springs, Järva county in Estonia, was “highly commended” by the international photography competition. The competition, which on its seventh year received 18,000 entries from around the globe, celebrates the work of image makers and offers an insight into the landscapes, wildlife and nature of the planet and the adventures to be found on it.

Sarv’s photo was praised in the “At the Water’s Edge” category. “This is the magic of an Estonian winter: although the temperature was -20°C, the water in this spring was flowing like it was summer. As the morning sun peeked out from behind the frost-covered trees, it was like being in a fairy tale, with the warm orange light starting to penetrate the desolate blue landscape. To make the most of the scene, I created a stitched panorama, reflecting the cinematic drama of the location,” Sarv said in a statement.

Polish photographer Witold Ziomek won the award in the “Water’s Edge” category for his picture of Thor’s valley in Iceland.

The overall winner and runner-up will be announced at the Photography Show in Birmingham, the UK, on 17 March.
