# Estonia plans to build an offshore wind farm near Hiiumaa

### The Estonian wind energy developer, Nelja Energia, is planning to build an offshore wind farm near the island of Hiiumaa and has signed a cooperation agreement with Hiiu municipality.

The country’s first offshore wind farm will, according to the plans, be comprising 100-160 wind turbines with an aggregate capacity of 700 to 1,100 megawatts in the sea to the north of Hiiumaa. According to the Estonian Wind Power Association, the turbines will have a nominal capacity of between four and seven megawatts.

The construction of the wind farm is scheduled to start in the second half of 2018, with the commissioning slated for 2020, the Wind Power Association said.

Under cooperation the agreement with Hiiu municipality, Nelja Energia commits to making a contribution to the development of the island, its economy and security of electricity supply.

The agreement also sets out that the wind farm will have a minimal visual footprint and that no turbines will be put up closer than 12 kilometers from the Hiiumaa island and on Neupokoyev Bank.
