While the spotlight at the 2019 Estonian Song Celebration naturally fell on the performers, Estonian World wandered among the 100,000-strong crowd at the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds, capturing snapshots of the remarkably diverse audience at this joyful national gathering.
Estonia’s cherished Song Celebration – which in 2019 marked its 150th anniversary – took place from 6–7 July in the capital, Tallinn. It is a singular event that, every five years, unites a vast choir of up to 30,000 singers. Around 100,000 spectators gather to listen, to watch and, at the most beloved moments, to sing along.
On 7 July, Estonian World captured snapshots of those who had come to share in this marvellous occasion. Some were famous, many were not; most were Estonians, though an increasing number of visitors from abroad are now drawn to this remarkable tradition.
