The well-known travel magazine, Condé Nast Traveler, has for the second year in a row declared the Tallinn Christmas market as one of the most charming in Europe.
The Traveler posted its 2019 list on its website on 22 November, saying it “has been updated with new information”.
The characterisation of the Tallinn Christmas market remained the same as in the last year’s list.
“In addition to Estonian Christmas dishes like black pudding and sour cabbage (it’s better than it sounds, we swear), Tallinn’s market – which travelers dubbed the Best Christmas Market of 2019, according to European Best Destinations – also has a Santa who arrives by reindeer-pulled sleigh. The highlight, though, is its Christmas tree, which the city has been displaying in front of its town hall since 1441—making it the first Christmas tree to ever be displayed in Europe,” the magazine says.
The remark about “sour cabbage” strikes as somewhat odd as it’s actually commonly known in the English and German-speaking world as “sauerkraut” – something that at least in the US, where Condé Nast Traveler is based, is commonly available and a well-known ingredient in sandwiches and hot dogs.
On the most charming Christmas markets’ list of 2019 by the Traveler, these cities stand out: Prague, the Czech Republic; Tallinn, Estonia; Cologne, Germany; Helsinki, Finland; Edinburgh, Scotland, the UK; Colmar, France; Trento, Italy; Brussels, Belgium; Budapest, Hungary; Wroclaw, Poland; Vienna, Austria; Salzburg, Austria; Copenhagen, Denmark; Dresden, Germany; Strasbourg, France; Stockholm, Sweden; Basel, Switzerland; and Zagreb, Croatia.
Compared with the list in 2018, Stuttgart and Nuremberg in Germany; Manchester, the UK, have been taken off; the new additions are Colmar, France; Wroclaw, Poland; Basel, Switzerland; and Zagreb, Croatia.
