Enterprise Estonia, the state-run agency responsible for promoting Estonia abroad and attracting investment, is to open a representative office in New York City in 2019.
The agency will launch a search of the foreign representative in the beginning of the new year.
“To be able to get access to export markets is one of the most important bottlenecks for our entrepreneur,” Rene Tammist, the Estonian minister of entrepreneurship and information technology, said in a statement. “An Enterprise Estonia foreign representative will be helpful to every entrepreneur who plans to enter foreign markets.”
According to the Enterprise Estonia entrepreneurship director, Tanel Rebane, the need for a representative office at the US East Coast is tremendous.
“While our Silicon Valley office is mainly aimed at the technology sphere, many traditional industry companies and also companies from the food, forestry and defence industry have expressed interest for exporting to the East Coast,” Rebane noted in a statement.
More business sectors in NYC
“For the East Coast office, we also weighed Boston, but decided for New York City as it’s the world’s leading business centre,” Rebane added. “In NYC, the office would be in synergy with the consulate general and the embassy (which is located in Washington, DC – editor) and has more business sectors Estonia is strong in – for example fintech, AI, banking, developing technologies and IT.”
Together with New York City, Enterprise Estonia will have export advisers in 14 markets – Singapore, India, China, Japan, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, the Netherlands and the UK. The agency will soon open an office also in Dubai, the UAE.
The duties of the export advisers include consultations, market research, developing business contacts, hosting events, finding export partners etc.
