20 historic photos of Estonia and its people restored in colour

Estonian photo enthusiast Hanno Puskar breathes new life into black-and-white images of his homeland and its people; Estonian World presents a selection of his colourised photographs.

Photography has been with us for two centuries, yet colour only became the dominant form in the 1970s. Colour lends images a sharper sense of reality, and new technology now allows old black-and-white photographs to be transformed with remarkable fidelity.

Estonian photo enthusiast Hanno Puskar has been colourising historic images of Estonia and its people. Estonian World presents a selection of his work.

Gardeners and staff in the gardens of Oru Palace, 1936. Until 1940, the palace served as the summer residence of the Estonian president, Konstantin Päts. On 13 August 1941, a fire caused by the retreating Soviet forces destroyed the palace. Today just the gardens remain.
